SEACOM has outlined its ambitious plans for 2018, including its plans for investment in fibre infrastructure.
The company will increase its focus on last-mile fibre solutions, using its existing wholesale infrastructure to provide a scalable and reliable system.
Distribution of fibre infrastructure to inner-city customers is a major component of the company’s plan for future growth, and it is considering extending its network to multiple business districts outside of its main hubs.
The company said it is aware of the fibre “land grab” in South Africa, and plans to make key infrastructure investments to increase its network coverage while the window of opportunity is still open.
Demonstrating its interest in developing last-mile infrastructure, SEACOM previously conducted a self-build project in Meyersdal, Johannesburg – laying 7.3km of fibre.
The Meyersdal development passes 14 office parks, 18 gated communities, and three retail premises in the area.
Fibre products
SEACOM’s current product set is aimed at the enterprise market and encompasses everything from direct fibre Internet access to cloud gateway solutions.
The company said it is activating up to 150 services per month, and its business fibre products offer no fair-usage limitations – with a minimum speed of 25Mbps.
In addition to its high-speed fibre products, SEACOM also provides other services to enterprise customers, including:
- Last-mile wireless solutions.
- VPNs and corporate connectivity.
- Direct Internet access to a data centre or PoP.
- Cloudworx – Secure gateway to major cloud services providers.
The company plans to partner with and acquire existing fibre wholesalers to increase its fibre coverage and connect more customers, in addition to building more infrastructure.
SEACOM also plans to expand other segments of its business in the coming year, encompassing infrastructure development and increasing its coverage in West Africa.
