Ookla’s Net Index website shows that the Gauteng suburbs of Randburg, Midrand, and Bryanston have the highest average fixed broadband speeds. Sandton is the area with the highest average mobile broadband speed.

The Net Index website uses data from millions of recent test results from Ookla’s Speedtest.net speed test platform.

The website shows that South Africa has an average fixed broadband download speed of 5.8Mbps, and an average upload speed of 2.6Mbps.

South Africa’s fixed broadband performance is far lower than the global average – 19.9Mbps download speed and 8.6Mbps upload speed.

South Africa’s mobile broadband performance is far closer to global standards, as shown in the table below.
