SA’s biggest bandwidth users in 2014

South Africa’s top DSL data users consumed over 5 terabytes (5,000GB) of data per account per month in 2014. This emerged from feedback from some of South Africa’s largest Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

According to information from Web Africa, Cybersmart, and Openweb, many DSL subscribers consume more than 1TB of data per month.

Most of these high-end subscribers use uncapped DSL accounts. However, some subscribers used capped accounts with free after-hours data to notch up terabytes of downloads.

Cybersmart CEO Laurie Fialkov explained that a handful of the top users are running wireless ISPs while using load-balanced ADSL lines for backhaul capacity.
