The latest FTTH neighbourhoods: others receiving 100Mbps upgrade

Telkom’s open-access fibre broadband network will include more than 25 additional areas, suburbs, and communities by the end of September 2015.

Telkom has the largest open-access fibre network in the country, and fibre is available in multiple suburbs of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban, Cape Town, Bloemfontein, and Port Elizabeth.

The news follows CEO Sipho Maseko’s commitment on 7 September that Telkom fibre will be accessible to one million homes by March 2018 – with half a million homes to have access by the end of 2016.

Telkom already has the largest FTTH network in the country, with 38,000 homes able to access the service.

MTN is investing around R1.2 billion to upgrade its network in KwaZulu-Natal, which includes the deployment of fibre-to-the-home in the suburb of La Lucia.

The deployment of this fibre network in La Lucia marks MTN’s first deployment of FTTH in the province,” said the company.

This follows an announcement by MTN that it had started deploying FTTH in Fresnaye and Bakoven in the Western Cape.

About 439 homes will be connected to this high-speed fibre network, and the first home will be connected before the end of October,” said MTN of its La Lucia project.

The open-access network is capable of delivering speeds of up to 100Mbps.

MTN is also expanding its LTE network in KZN, and has rolled out approximately 700 LTE sites in the past six months.
