Arguably the world’s most respected game developer, Blizzard, turns 20 years old today.
To celebrate the occasion, two of the company’s three founders, Michael Morhaime and Frank Pearce, have recorded a video message for their fans.
“When we first started the company in 1991 there were just three of us and we really just wanted to use this opportunity to thank you for all these years of support, because without you we wouldn’t be able to do what we do,” said Morhaime.
Blizzard was originally launched as Silicon & Synapse back in 1992. As Silicon & Synapse, the developer released Battle Chess, The Lost Vikings and Rock N’ Roll Racing. In 1994 the company changed its name to Blizzard and launched Warcraft. It then launched Diablo in 1997 and StarCraft in 1998. These three games laid the foundations for three of the most loved universes in gaming.
The company is also responsible for the world’s most profitable video game: World of Warcraft, which retains a paying monthly subscriber base of around 12 million people.
