The South African government is urging Tesla to set up manufacturing facilities in the country, reports Fortune.
This follows a DTI statement by Minister Rob Davies in which Tesla had “expressed the interest of investing in South Africa”.
Minister Davies indicated that South Africa’s automotive programme already has an additional incentive that applies to the electric vehicles.
He further stated that government understands that electric vehicles are where things are going, including hybrids and fuel cells.
But it’s not Tesla’s vehicles that will bring the biggest business the country.
“It is rather Tesla’s grid battery, the PowerWall, that is likely to make a serious impact in a country that has an underfunded electricity grid, a lot of sun for solar energy, and many businesses and even homes that are keen to protect themselves from occasional blackouts.”

But Musk is WHITE ! Strikes, a population with entitlement culture. Tesla would have to be crayzee! Will the ANC change their racist behaviour ? No. Musk/Tesla/SpaceX are probably being courted by dozens of countries.
I have been to Saint Petersburg, Russia (and surrounding rural areas). Labour is cheap, people are highly educated and they don’t go on strike, well developed rail/roads infrastructure, no power blackouts.
