Call of Duty: Black Ops received harsh criticism at launch thanks to a wide range of bugs and glitches present particularly in the PC and PS3 versions. In fact, according to consumer protection group Gamers’ Voice, they have received so many complaints from angry gamers that they “couldn’t count them”.
Gamers’ Voice wrote and open letter to Activision in January concerning the negative feedback they had received from gamers. According to Beefjack.com, Gamers’ Voice Chairman Paul Gibson had this to say about the next Call of Duty title:
“It’ll be very interesting to see when the next Call of Duty comes out because there is a significant number of people who won’t be buying it on the basis of what has happened with Black Ops.”
Many would agree that the Call of Duty franchise has been on a steady decline since Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare which, alongside Modern Warfare 2, remains the most critically acclaimed release in the series to date, earning a Metacritic score of 94/100.
The Xbox 360 version of Black Ops was the least buggy, and holds a Metacritic score of 87/100 Interestingly, while the PS3 version received numerous complaints, it holds a slightly higher score of 88/100. Only the PC version fell seriously short of the magical 90/100 mark, earning a Metacritic score of 81/100. This makes Black Ops the lowest scoring PC version of Call of Duty yet released.
Whether or not Activision can make right on the CoD name with the inevitable release of Call of Duty 8 later this year remains to be seen.
