Streets of Rage remake finally completed

5 April 2011

Beat ‘em up Streets of Rage was a hot property in the early 90’s, spawning three titles in the series. The first was released for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis and it was later ported to the Game Gear, Sega CD and Sega Master System.

A Streets of Rage remake has been in production for around eight years, and the development team has released a final stable version. The remake features all the best elements from the three titles in the series. This is as good as it gets as there are no plans to further update the game. It is entirely freeware and can the 218MB file can be downloaded from the Streets of Rage project webpage. Currently only the Windows version is available but a Linux port will be coming soon.

“Streets of Rage Remake is a project created from scratch, it does not use reverse engineering nor a single line of code from the original games. It’s all based on visual interpretation, comparing how things work in the original games and trying to mimic it for Streets of Rage Remake,” explained the developers.

The game features 19 playable characters, 64 enemies, 103 stages, 40 cutscenes, 76 music tracks, re-mastered original sound FX, and a whole bunch of editors and additional functions. Unfortunately an online mode had to be scrapped due to implementation problems.
