Anonymous ‘ceasing DDoS attacks’ – vows to keep fighting

13 April 2011

The Anonymous collective of hackers have issued a news update on the back of the settlement of the legal dispute between Sony and George ‘GeoHot’ Hotz. The group still intends to make their opinions clear to Sony.

“We will begin by stating that we are ceasing our DDoS attacks on Sony altogether, as we believe the impact of this particular type of attack has surpassed its peak. Sony’s poor attempt to explain the system outages by lying about the nature of them is laughable. Therefore, Anonymous is now choosing to pursue other ways of getting Sony’s attention,” states Anonymous via the AnonNews website.

The group did not wish to speculate on the outcome of the George Hotz vs. Sony legal case, but they did state that they believe this is not the end of the matter from their perspective.

“We believe Sony’s actions in this case are unjust. We do not agree with Sony forcing social media sites like Youtube to hand over the IP addresses of people who viewed GeoHots videos. We view this as a severe violation of privacy rights. We disagree with Sony forcefully gathering personal information from other companies like PayPal. We find it unacceptable that Sony is even permitted to request this information in the first place. These acts are completely disrespectful and unforgivable,” states Anonymous.

The group said that this is bigger than “one man’s lopsided battle against a huge corporation,” and suggested that the outcome of this legal case has broad implications for anyone who owns a piece of equipment, regardless of the manufacturer. Anonymous believes that the legal outcome will embolden other ‘greedy corporations’ who will use similar tactics in future and therefore a voice of protest must continue to be heard. “Operation Sony, or OpSony for short, is simply the opening shot.”

As part of this voice of protest, Anonymous still plans to execute demonstrations outside of Sony Stores around the world on 16 April.
