Mortal Kombat 9 delayed: Nu Metro explains

15 April 2011

Mortal Kombat 9 is a rather highly anticipated entrant in the franchise. The game is being developed by NetherRealm studios, which was born of the ashes of WB Games Chicago, which was previously Midway Games.

Series co-creator Ed Boon leads the studio, and promises that Mortal Kombat 9 will focus heavily on the characters and story, while also delivering a polished and in-depth fighting system that will entice veterans of the series. Rendered in 3D, the game will be fixed in the 2.5D side on classic fighter style.

Unfortunately the SA release date for the game has been sketchy. Nu Metro previously stated that they were working hard to ensure the game would arrive in SA at the same time as EU launch – 21 April.

However, as Keith Viljoen of local distributor Nu Metro has informed us, an international production delay caused the release date for the game to be pushed back for both the PS3 and the Xbox 360 – and not only in South Africa. “Nu Metro has in fact done everything within our domain to ensure we met the original international street date of the 21st April 2011. This delay is not just applicable to SA,” said Viljoen.

This raises the question of whether the production delay affects both the standard and Kollector’s edition of the game. “We are awaiting confirmation from Warner regarding the final collection date for the Kollector’s edition – at this stage we are aiming for the Kollector’s to be available for a release date of the 29th of April as well,” said Viljoen.

Viljoen confirmed that these delays will not affect the recommended retail pricing of the game. As it stands, the Kollector’s Edtion of Mortal Kombat 9 will launch alongside the standard version, for Xbox 360 and PS3, on 29 April 2011. The recommended retail pricing will be R799 for the Kollector’s Edition, and R599 for the standard edition. Unfortunately NuMetro could not disclose how many units of the Kollector’s Edition will be arriving on our shores, but one can rest assured it will likely be ‘limited.’
