Anonymous' Sony Store protest fails?

18 April 2011

The latest development in the war between Anonymous and Sony had the internet group threatening “the biggest attack” Sony has ever seen.

“The attacks on the websites of sony have been ceased, sony’s poor attemps (sic) to explain the system outages through maintenance amuse us. Therefore we are finding other ways to get sony’s attention,” said a video released by Anonymous, which went on to promote a “sit-in” at Sony Centres around the world.

“This April 16th, grab your mask, a few friends, and get to a local sony store by you. Use the IRC and the official Facebook page to organize a protest in your area. Make sure the people know the injustices performed by this corrupt company.”

The official Facebook event page for the sit-in has 4,103 confirmed attendees, but it would seem that far less people actually turned out at Sony Centres around the world over the weekend.

The facebook page has been flooded by anti-Anonymous posts, as well as posts by individuals who attended the sit-in claiming that the turnout at most Sony Centres was very limited.

“I went to the Sony Outlet in San Diego in the San Ysidro mall. No One was there. I didn’t have materials to make signs. I didn’t have the ink to print fliers. I don’t own a mask. And NO ONE was there. Do you know what I did? at first I waited, then I stood outside the store and I talked to people. I stood there, alone, simply asking people to listen and telling them what was happening. And do you know what. I am here to report MILD SUCCESS in SAN DIEGO. If anything I made people realize something was happening. I also turned people back with free information. Again, MILD SUCCESS in SAN DIEGO,” said one poster.

“Well I went to Costa Mesa and no one there, went to LA … no one there… so I stuck fliers places till I got kicked out haha mostly fail if ya ask me :(,” said another poster.

More feedback on the Operastion Sonu facebook page:

“by the way, operation sony was a fail. EVERY sony store i went to where in my area were open yesterday and they were no fags with masks handling out flyers. If you want to help people like you claim, go after people who do REAL CRIMES such as online predators and scammers. You people are a disgrace to the human race”

“One person being removed by police, from a sony location… Escorted home by them…”

“wow pathetic turnout so far. Ye are made of fail.”

“Tragic situation in Idaho… nothing happening in my state…”

“i don’t think there was some people in sony store in belgium,i was going to 1-2sony store in brussels and i saw nobody for protest or i miss them! Lol”

Anonymous seemed to have more success in the UK than in the USA, as numerous Sony Centres around Britain were closed for the weekend, and in some instances there were police officers standing guard in anticipation of the protestors.
