Rumour control: Is Sony dumping the PSP Go?

20 April 2011

Reports coming out of Japan and the UK are claiming that Sony is planning to bin the PSP Go.

According to a Japanese Sony Shop owner in Tokyo (via Adriasang), they’re no longer stocking or selling the handheld, and a Sony rep has told him that the it’s no longer in production.

Over on the other side of the planet, an unidentified “UK retail source” told MCV that their own suppliers have said that, “that once current PSPgo stock is sold we will not be receiving replenishments”.

Sony has yet to deny or confirm the news, saying only that, “”It is a very exciting time for PlayStation portable devices. Before the end of the year we are launching NGP, our next generation portable device, which we believe will revolutionize portable gaming.

“In the meantime, the current generation of PSPs continue to be in demand, especially since the introduction of our value for money, Essentials range of games and we will continue to meet that demand.”

The PSP Go has seen a number of price cuts over the last six months or so, after failing to ever really make an impact on the scene.
