Renowned screen writers hired for Tomb Raider film reboot

Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby have been hired to write the screenplay for the planned Tomb Raider film reboot. The pair is known for having written Children of Men, Iron Man and the upcoming Cowboys & Aliens (July 2011). GK Films is producing the film.

Graham King of GK Films said that “Mark and Hawk’s clear sensibilities of action and emotion are perfect for the direction we are taking this franchise.”

Hawk and Fergus said: “We are thrilled to be working with Graham King and his formidable team, and we aim to write an origin story for Lara Croft that solidifies her place alongside Ellen Ripley and Sarah Connor in the pantheon of great female action heroes.”

The previous silver screen outings of Tomb Raider did rather well at the box office, no doubt due in part to the buxom (and irksome) Angelina Jolie in the role of Lara Croft. Variety reports that the two movies, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) and Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life (2003) raked in a combined worldwide gross of US$432 million (±R2.987 billion).

The actress to play Lara in this origins movie has not been chosen yet. The movie is being aimed for a 2013 release, so no need to get too excited just yet.

We do have a Tomb Raider game reboot to look forward to in the meantime. The game hasn’t been dated, but there is a rumour likely spawned of gamer hopefulness and capitalist greed that pegs the title for a September 2011 release.
