Because nothing ever really goes quite according to plan, it’s turned out that the PSN’s reactivation wasn’t entirely without its own problems, and Sony’s emergency response corps has been busy fixing up a password reset exploit that briefly gave hackers access to compromised accounts.
According to reports, the exploit made it possible for hackers to reset user passwords using only the account holder’s date of birth and email address, information that was allegedly leaked during the security breach earlier this month.
“We temporarily took down the PSN and Qriocity password reset page,” writes Sony’s corporate communications and social media guy, Patrick Seybold, over on the PlayStation Blog. “Contrary to some reports, there was no hack involved. In the process of resetting of passwords there was a URL exploit that we have subsequently fixed.
“Consumers who haven’t reset their passwords for PSN are still encouraged to do so directly on their PS3. Otherwise, they can continue to do so via the website as soon as we bring that site back up.”
