More Skyrim details revealed

PC Gamer has published a fantastic feature on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, in which the game’s director Todd Howard revealed numerous new details about the game. Howard has already shared quite a lot of information about the game, so to catch you up, here’s what we already knew:

Skyrim: Here be Dragons 

Details

– Skyrim’s alchemy system will be different to Oblivion’s

– The landmass will be roughly the same as Oblivion’s

– Skyrim will use the same ten races as Oblivion

– The world of Skyrim will be populated by wolves, mammoths, deer, elk and rabbits

– There will also be giants in Skyrim, and they will often be in close proximity to mammoths

– There will be a story behind the giants explaining why they live in the wild

– There will be special menus for skills such as cooking

– There will be over 120 dungeons

– Dungeons will take anywhere between 15 minutes and 2 hours to complete

– Locations will be varied, but will stick to classic high-fantasy feel

– There will be raw and cooked versions of each foodstuff

– Traps will be more exciting and “fun”

– NPCs won’t just stand around, they will cook, build, craft etc. 

– There will be puzzle solving elements

– Players will be able to chop wood

– There will be a crafting discipline for each player type (alchemy, smithery, enchanting confirmed)

– Bethesda has had more manpower and time with Skyrim

– There will be a sneak skill and new stealth system which borrows from Fallout 3

– The game will feature the Nine Divines and Daedra, some of which will offer unique quests

So with that out the way, here’s some stuff we didn’t already know:

New info

– Flower picking is back.

– Combat will be more tactical, with enemies using their shields more. 

– There will be automatic “finishing moves”.

– NPCs will always be busy doing something, and you will be able to do anything they can do. 

– You actions will potentially affect a town’s economy. IE, damaging a town’s wood supply means they won’t be able to sell you arrows.

– Lots more time and money has been spent on getting the voice acting right.

– The peak of an area called The Throat will require players to ascend 7000 steps to get to. The guy guys who inhabit this peak will teach you about “dragon shouts”, which are spells derived from dragon magic.

– There will be dynamic weather – snow will slowly engulf terrain. 

– PC Gamer called the spells more “immediate” and powerful”.

– It will be possible to combine and dual wield spells for unique results.

– There will be dungeons set inside glaciers.

– There will be children, but it will not be possible to kill them.

Of course the most important things you need to know about Skyrim, are when it is being released, and on what platforms. The answers: 11 November, 2011, and PC, PS3 or Xbox 360.
