Publisher Konami Digital Entertainment and developer Gaijin Entertainment have announced a new intellectual property (IP) – Birds of Steel. The title promises to deliver realistic air combat and MMO gameplay across famous WWII aerial battle theatres. Birds of Steel will take off on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system – no departure date has been scheduled. Wow, aircraft-related jokes are weak.
Developed by Gaijin Entertainment, Birds of Steel spans many of the most important air battles of World War II. These include the battles of Midway, Guadalcanal, Coral Sea, Siege of Malta and the attack on Pearl Harbor. Players will be able to experience these battles in both singleplayer campaigns and multiplayer matches.

“For far too long, first person shooter fans have been tied to the foot soldier point of view, with the rare ability to experience realistic flight simulations or combat situations,” said Shinji Hirano, President of Konami Digital Entertainment. “Birds of Steel pushes the throttle of realism by giving fans what they’ve been missing; cooperative online game play, life-like VFX and game dynamics, and a campaign that spans that encompasses some of history’s most memorable aerial battles.”
For flight combat sim fans, the online multiplayer element sounds quite compelling. In Birds of Steel’s online features, players can engage in cooperative missions with friends, or take to the ‘versus arena’ with up to 16 other pilots to see who really owns the skies in a vicious dogfight. Match replays can also be saved and shared.

Gameplay modes include team death matches, cooperative strike campaigns, “Capture the Airfield” missions, and tournament play. Konami indicates that tournaments require Xbox Live; there is no indication at this point of this feature for PSN on the PlayStation 3.
Birds of Steel features over 100 famous fighter planes from the entire axis and allied forces, including the Spitfire, P-51D Mustang, Zero, and the Messerschmitt 109.
Players can participate as a member of the American or Japanese Navy, Army or Air Forces. Players will experience lifelike aircraft damage, cockpit views and flight controls. As players complete missions, new planes are unlocked, with the ability to use the aircraft in the multiplayer arena. Players also have the ability to see how their actions affect the entire theatre of battery operations, as ground troops and artillery batteries react to the ensuing air battles and squadron missions.
