Rumour control: Sony NGP specs downgraded to compete with Nintendo 3DS price point

27 May 2011

According to a report on French gaming site 01.net (declined, conjugated, and translated by 1UP’s vocab wizards), Sony’s codenamed-Next Generation Portable has had a bit of a spec downgrade so the new handheld can compete with the Nintendo’s 3DS retail price point. Which might sound like a rather specious rumour, but the site apparently has a history of credible info leaks about the NGP.

The report claims that hardware revisions to the original specs include an on-board RAM cut of 50% to 256 MB; a reduction in the OS footprint in memory tasks; and the complete removal of the previously announced 16 GB of internal flash memory, opting instead for external memory cards. The 128 MB of video RAM remains unchanged.

Also, the site says Sony will be launching the NGP in Japan later this year, and everywhere else sometime in 2012.

Sony’s not saying anything for the moment, but expect all to be revealed at E3 in June.
