Modern Warfare 3 expands its third leg

30 May 2011

The Spec Ops gameplay mode was well-received in Modern Warfare 2. The mode allowed players to take on stand-alone missions either by themselves or cooperatively with an online friend. There were five of these missions in Modern Warfare 2, based on maps from the single player campaign. Infinity Ward seems set to improve on this feature.

Infinity Ward creative strategist, and one of the few remaining senior developers at the studio following the post-Modern Warfare 2 mass exodus, Robert Bowling, has shared some details on the Spec Ops mode in Modern Warfare 3.

Modern Warfare 3 Spec Ops mode features

•    Progressive ranking system
•    Online matchmaking system
•    Leader boards
•    Survival mode on the standard multiplayer maps
•    Traditional Spec Ops mode based on the single player maps

“All that stuff really fleshes out Spec Ops and adds in a lot that we know our fans are going to love, some of the most addictive aspects of Multiplayer,” said Bowling.

The new survival mode sounds quite compelling. Players will team up to hold of wave after wave of enemies. In-game currency can be used to purchase weapon upgrades and other helpful items, such as positionable defence turrets.

The enemies start out as simple attack dogs, but soon become explosive suicide attack dogs. Then come the soldiers, suicide soldiers, attack helicopters, and ultimately different types of juggernauts, returning from the previous games.

“You definitely have to change up your strategy as the enemy changes up. Obviously how you fight the kamakazi dudes is different from how you fight the normal dudes and how you fight a dog is different from…how you fight juggernauts. They are…big and armoured, so they will just brute force come at you – but they each have their own way of being taken out effectively,” said Bowling.

The developers of Modern Warfare 3 hope that players will find comfort in the Spec Ops mode as a way of preparing themselves for graduating up to the full online multiplayer experience.

Michael Condrey of co-development studio Sledgehammer Games said: “We have all been challenged. There’re such hard-core players out there in the online community and you hear all the stories about (youngsters) swearing and ruining the experience. With Spec Ops, you can really get in there and hone your skills in a more confined environment. I think it’s a little more of an easy entry. I don’t have as much time as I did when I was 20 to be honing my twitch skills, but this certainly gives me a venue to experiment.”

Infinity Ward executive producer Mark Rubin concluded by saying: “We added Spec Ops as the third game mode – that is really stepped up this time. It is really a stronger leg of the tripod.”
