We’re publishing this rumour not because it is likely true, but rather because the concept behind it is just so gosh darn cool.
Apparently, the next iteration of Microsoft’s operation system will support Xbox 360 games. Scoff all you want, it is a well documented fact that Microsoft’s games division doesn’t make its money on console sales, but rather off Xbox LIVE subscriptions and licensing fees from game sales. So, allowing people to play Xbox 360 games on PC would just enlarge the potential Xbox 360 game buying market, and quite dramatically to boot.
Apparently Xbox 360 on PC will carry a subscription fee, just like Xbox Live. Xbox 360 gaming on PC will use the Windows Live Marketplace, and Xbox 360 PC gamers will not be able to play online against Xbox 360 console gamers, due obviously to the inherent advantage that the keyboard+mouse control combo provides.
I’ll be honest, it sounds pretty far-fetched, and there doesn’t seem to be any attributable source at this point, so we’re filing this under “Yea, cool idea but probably not true” for now.
Speaking of things that are far-fetched: Onlive right now allows people to play games like Crysis, Homefront and Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood streamed live over the internet, which kind of makes anything seem possible, right?
