Maybe it’s just because the two games were released around about the same time back in 2009, but it seemed Prototype and InFamous were constantly compared to one another, even precipitating a bit of an Xbox versus PS3 war despite Prototype being a multiplatform launch.
Next time around, it’s going to be different. Even “completely different”, according to Prototype dev, Radical Entertainment.
“The first InFamous was really cool and the second one seems to be shaping up really well,” the project’s design director Matt Armstrong tells Eurogamer.
“But we offer something completely different and there’s space in the market for both games.
“The things reviewers saw were the same things we saw,” he explains, citing the game’s rather spotty plot as an example.
“We had a main character in Alex Mercer who wasn’t always as aligned with his powers as we’d hoped. We had a story that was very involved and convoluted and difficult to follow.
“There’s something very special about this game and this time around we’re coming out with something that’s a big expansion of all the things that were good about the first game, while simultaneously addressing all the things we were never really happy about.”
Prototype 2 is due out sometime in 2012, so they’ve got plenty of time to work that out.
