Nintendo announces new HD console: Wii U

7 June 2011

Speaking at Nintendo’s E3 2011 keynote address, Nintendo America president Reggie Fills Aimes has announced a brand new platform from the company.

It’s caled Wii U, and “It’s a system for everyone, but it’s tailor made for you,” says Fills Aimes.

As expected, Wii U features a pretty big handheld controller with a 6.2-inch touch screen in the middle. The controller has four face buttons, two thumb sticks, two triggers, two shoulders and a d-pad. One of the interesting features of the device, is that you can play games on the TV via the console itself, but also on the screen that is built into the controller.  “You won’t have to give up your gameplay when someone else comes in the room and wants to watch a TV program,” said Fills Aimes.

Nintendo showed off a range of games which make use of the controller’s built in motion detection, cameras, and touch screen.

The Wii U is totally backwards compatible with the original Wii and all its games and peripherals.

It also boasts a rumble feature, microphone and speakers.

Nintendo claims that Wii U is not designed to be a portable games console,  although the controller does resemble a modern tablet.

The console itself will be the first HD console released by Nintendo.

When discussing the Wii U, Shigeru Miyamoto said “There’s so many new possibilities, we’re just trying to decide where to begin.”

Miyamoto stated earlier in the presentation that the platform will only be released next year.
