Dark Souls will be superior on PS3

9 June 2011

The original Demon’s Souls was launched exclusively on PS3, and was lauded not only for its innovative and addictive gameplay, but also for its infuriating difficulty level which made for a supremely satisfying experience.

The sequel, Dark Souls, is being developed for Xbox 360 as well as PS3, although it would appear that the PS3 version will be technically superior.

Firstly, the lead development platform will be PS3. Once completed it is being ported to Xbox 360. This should automatically give the PS3 an edge. However, the more worrying factor for Xbox 360 owners is that in order to fit the entire game on one disk, Atlus will have to heavily compress the game.

Speaking to justpushstart at E3, a Namco Bandai representative said “a lot of compression has to be done on the Xbox 360 to make it stay on a single disc”.

Compression is never a good thing when it comes to game development. Logic dictates that the PS3 version should offer more detailed visuals and richer textures.

Darks Souls is due out on PS3 and Xbox 360 in October 2011.
