Bobby Kotick to buy controlling stake in MySpace

10 June 2011

Reuters reports that Activision Blizzard Chief Executive, and general all round videogame industry villain, Bobby Kotick is in final talks to acquire a controlling stake in MySpace.

The acquisition is personal, and is in no way linked to Activision Blizzard.

Kotick is part of a small investor group. The group is reportedly the current favoured bidder for the controlling stake in MySpace.

Current MySpace owner, News Corp paid $580 million for MySpace back in 2005. More recently, News Corp had hoped to do a deal valuing the flagging social network at just $100 million, but sources in April said it was unlikely to achieve this target. Sources report that following the sale, News Corp will retain a 20% stake in the business.

Recently Bobby Kotick made headlines for laughing off Battlefield 3 as a “PC game”, saying he’s not too worried about its impact on Modern Warfare 3 sales. He was then denied entry to play the game during E3, with senior EA management on the floor telling him “it would not be possible”.
