Spanish police arrest 3 Anonymous "leaders"

11 June 2011

Three supposed Anonymous “leaders” have been arrested by Spanish police, and now each face up to 3 years of jail time.

One of the hackers was running a home server that was used to coordinated online attacks against numerous government websites, as well as financial and business institutions. The server was also found to be instrumental in attacks against Sony.

The Technological Investigation Brigade of the National Police analysed over 2 million lines of chat logs and web pages used by confirmed Anonymous hackers. By scouring this data, the police were lead to believe that Anonymous’ leadership was operating out of the Spanish cities of Barcelona, Valencia and Almeria, where there were eventually tracked down and arrested.

The report claims that these three key members were instrumental in leading numerous attacks, not only against Sony, but also the governments of New Zealand, Egypt, Algeria, Libya, Iran, Chile and Columbia, as well as BBVA, Bankia and Enel.
