Telkom today announced their annual results for the year ended 31 March 2011, revealing a drop in revenue and a continued decline in fixed line customers.
One area which remained a strong performer is ADSL where subscriber numbers increased by 16.1% to 751,625 (from 699,368) when compared to the 31 March 2010 reporting period.
Telkom highlighted that their share of net additions within the entire broadband market is declining as a result of the rapid growth in mobile broadband. Broadband does however remain a growth driver for Telkom.
“To capitalise on this growth it is necessary for Telkom to invest significantly in shortening the local loop, additional fibre and Metro Ethernet,” Telkom said.
“Fixed-line broadband needs to differentiate itself from mobile offerings through far higher speeds and quality. Research indicates that customers are prepared to pay more for higher value services.”
Telkom said that it plans to offer customers “far higher speeds and quality” in selected areas in the next few years.
“Telkom gearing up to provide higher broadband speeds and unmatched end-to-end quality data packages to enterprise and other value clusters,” said Telkom CEO Pinky Moholi.
“Telkom will continue to up-sell and cross-sell higher bandwidth converged products to both consumer and enterprise segments,” the company said.
