Battlefield 3 Limited Edition causes boycott

13 June 2011

It’s boycott time again, and this time Activision is not on the receiving end. EA recently announced that people who pre-order the Battlefield 3 Limited Edition: Physical Warfare Pack will get special in game items.

Those items include the Type 88 light machine gun “with bipod for superior firepower and total zone control”, “the SKS sniper rifle flash suppressor that provides increased stealth abilities for Recon soldiers”, and the “lethal armour-piercing flechette ammo for the DAO-12 semi-automatic shotgun that is sure to tear through anything in its path.”

These items will be exclusive to customers who pre-order the Limited Edition version of the game. On top of these items, players will get the Karkland digital expansion pack for free, which unlocks four recreated Battlefield 2 maps.

The problem is that if you don’t pre-order this special edition version of the game, you will not be able to access all the same weapons as those who do, which makes for a great incentive to pre-order, but also raises questions about multiplayer fairness and balance.

As a result, gamers are calling for a boycott of the game unless EA changes its mind about the Limited Edition exclusive content.

Incidentally, EA tried to pull the same stunt with Battlefield: Bad Company, but a boycott started by Sarcasticgamer ultimately lead to EA scrapping the idea.

Update

We have confirmed with EA that the Limited Edition: Physical Warfare Pack edition of Battlefield 3 will be available exclusively through BTGames.
