Homefront dev closes up shop, Homefront 2 announced

14 June 2011

Homefront dev Kaos Studios is apparently officially out of business, which isn’t all that shocking considering that the game wasn’t exactly a big hit with the critics.

So it IS somewhat shocking then that publisher THQ has signed off on a sequel. Maybe they’ll get it right the second time around?

“Everything we learned from [the original] you’ll see executed in other games going forward, and including that franchise going forward,” THQ chief Danny Bilsen tells Eurogamer. “We’ll have some really interesting announcements in the future about the future of that brand.”

Despite a pretty huge marketing campaign, the game didn’t generate very much enthusiasm after a rather spotty launch, managing only 70 on Metacritic. Asked if he was happy with it, even Bilsen’s a bit of a critic.

“No,” he admits. “But I loved the game. It was a tremendous learning experience for us. We learned a lot about managing dedicated servers. We got very ambitious with dedicated servers.
“I put a lot of myself into that effort on that game. I learned a lot. I still think it’s creatively a fantastic game, a great place to go. The environmental storytelling is excellent. The marketing was wonderful. That brand resonated with a lot of people emotionally.

“We sold through a million units in a week. That’s huge on a brand new IP.”

“The issues we had on Homefront we’ll never have again,” he adds later. “And yet, I absolutely love that brand and want to continue to make it great.”

According to the same report, the sequel will be handled in-house over at THQ’s Montreal office.
