Game Jam – Opportunities for aspiring South African game developers

Adanian Labs and Animation SA (ASA) are collaborating to host the 2022 Game Jam event, which will start on Friday, 8 April and continue until Sunday, 10 April.

The event will be hosted at the ASA Incubation Hub at Constitution Hill in Braamfontein and is the first of its kind in South Africa.

Adanian Labs co-founder Bendon Murgor said that Game Jam will be an annual event in Johannesburg and Cape Town and that it will travel across Africa.

The event aims to expose game development graduates and those interested in game development to possible careers within the industry that fall outside of making traditional video games, such as gamification.

“The Game Jam is also part of collective efforts to allow African developers to participate in the new digital world of tokenisation, game metaverse, and tech ecosystem,” said Murgor.

This year’s Game Jam will involve 20 aspiring game development interns showcasing their ability to create educational content that engages younger audiences.

Participants will be judged on how they balance game design principles with the needs of non-entertainment clients.

Based on their performance, participants will get the opportunity to join an internship programme at one of the companies present in the ASA Incubator.

Additionally, participation in the event will allow applicants to get more information on careers in the South African video game industry while improving their development skills.
