Alleged LulzSec hacker told his mom he was “playing games”

24 June 2011

Accused LulzSec hacker Ryan Cleary might not have fooled the FBI, but he totally fooled his whole family. Speaking to The Mirror, mom Rita Cleary says she had no idea her son was involved in DDoSing the CIA, Sony, Nintendo, and a whole bunch of other targets. To be fair, she probably doesn’t know what a DDoS even is.

“Ryan lives his life online,” she says. “I thought he was playing computer games in his room. I can’t believe it. He rarely left the house.

“I asked him what he was doing and he said he was playing games. Maybe I was naive to believe him.”

She totally was. Everybody knows what it means when a teenage boy says he’s “playing games” in his locked room. I mean hacking, obviously.

Ryan was arrested earlier this week, and is currently charged with five counts of e-crime. A Metropolitan Police spokesperson told The Mirror that “searches led to the examination of a significant amount of material,” with Cleary now facing possibility of extradition to the US.

Does he deserve jail time, or should we forgive him? I mean, as Confucious would say, he wasn’t thinking cleary at the time…
