Rugby World Cup 2011 – local pricing and release date

5 July 2011

Being South Africa’s second biggest sport, as well as the only major sport in which we have managed to lift a World Cup trophy, there is a lot of local interest surrounding 505 Games’ Rugby World Cup 2011.

The game is being brought into the country by Apex Interactive. Account Manager Vaughn Golden believes that Rugby World Cup 2011 is “the most awaited sport game in SA”, and claims that the company is “going big”.

Rugby World Cup 2011 – what you should know

– Available on PS3 and Xbox 360
– Players can play as any of the 20 Rugby World Cup 2011 participating countries.
– Team licenses confirmed so far: South Africa, England and France. More are expected to be announced soon.
– Will include online multiplayer via Xbox Live and PSN
– HB Studios is working closely with The Rugby Forum to create a game that will appeal to fans of the sport.
– There will be a “player editor”.

Sadly, competing rugby game, Rugby Challenge, has secured exclusive licenses for the Wallabies and the All blacks, so in place of the official Australian and New Zealand rugby teams, players will have to make do with likenesses, as well as butchered player names that kind of sound like the actual players. Determined gamers will however be able to edit player names and even attributes to make non-licensed teams more true-to-life.

Apex today revealed to retailers that the game will hit local shelves on 26 August to coincide with the European release date, and both PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will carry a recommended price tag of R599.
