Gamestop: Xbox 720, PS4 to come in 2014

16 July 2011

American video game retailer Gamestop has announced that they don’t believe the Xbox 720 and PS4 will be out before 2014. While it seems Gamestop is not giving any indication of inside information, when the industry giant speaks, people listen.

According to Baird, a financial research firm, this prediction came from senior executives during a series of meetings with investors.  A statement was released which read: “Management does not expect new hardware consoles from Microsoft and Sony until 2014.”

However, Gamestop did cover their bases by adding that “a successful launch of Nintendo’s Wii U in 2012 could add pressure to accelerate a hardware refresh.”

They went on to talk about the Playstation Vita, which Gamestop is enthusiastic about considering what they feel is an aggressive price point of $249 (+-R1770).

Whether their predictions are accurate remains to be seen, but it seems apparent that Nintendo’s early next-gen release will be putting a lot of pressure on the competition to speed up production.
