Meet Mass Effect 3’s James Vega

18 July 2011

BioWare has yanked the Human Systems Alliance-branded tarp off the SSV Normandy’s hottest new recruit, James Vega. He’s sensitive, likes long walks on the Sea of Tranquility’s north beach, and has two bionic cats. Maybe. He just looks like that kinda guy.

According to lead designer Preston Watamaniuk, he’s a defensive soldier-type with a play emphasis on “survivability”.

So, a tank.

As with just about everything, community opinion on the latest addition to Mass Effect 3’s cast has been somewhat divided – he’s not, um, conventionally attractive, and as another grunt-class gun bro, he just doesn’t seem particularly special. He does look a little bit like the Sicilian from The Princess Bride, though, which is pretty thweet.

“Enjoyed your first impressions of Vega,” says BioWare’s Casey Hudson on Twitter. “We have fun with our ensemble casts: chars are designed to be loved by some players but not all.”

Mass Effect 3 is due out sometime next year.
