Epic admits Bulletstorm didn't turn a profit

23 July 2011

Epic has admitted to Kotaku that their early 2011 release, Bulletstorm, “didn’t make money for us.” Despite not turning a profit, Epic president Mike Capps says he has no regrets.

The game was developed by Polish studio People Can Fly, whose impressive first game release was Painkiller. The company was formed in 2002 and later acquired by Epic in 2007.

Mike Capp says he doesn’t regret green-lighting Bulletstorm, as opposed to the alternative of developing content for Gears of War. “The studio has shipped AAA content,” he said. “The next thing we do with People Can Fly will be great.”

The commercial failure of Bulletstorm is somewhat surprising given the nature of the game and the hype surrounding its release. It even sports a respectable Metacritic score in the low 80s across all platforms.

It wouldn’t be the first time a decent game didn’t get the retail success it deserves, and I think we can look forward to exciting things from People Can Fly in the future.
