Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge coming to SA

25 July 2011

Earlier this month local distributor Apex Interactive confirmed that it will be bringing Rugby World Cup 2011 to South Africa. The official game of this year’s rugby world cup event will be released on PS3 and Xbox 360, and will hit shelves on 26 August.

While Rugby World Cup 2011 will feature a number of licensed teams, including the Springboks, it will not feature the All Blacks or Wallabies – which means that instead of real player names and jerseys for the New Zealand and Australian rugby teams, players will have to make do with generic replacements.

Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge, however, will feature full licensing for the New Zealand and Australia rugby teams, but it won’t let you participate in the Rugby World Cup, or play as the Springboks. You will have access to 93 teams, 31 stadia, the Tru Nations, Bledisloe Cup, Super Rugby Teams, Aviva Premiership Rugby, Top 14 Orange and other relatively obscure tournaments.

Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge will be released for PS3 and Xbox 360 in quarter 3 2011, and a PC version is planned for release at a later date.

Local distributor Megarom has sent out the following press release:

“Megarom Interactive (Pty) Ltd., South Africa’s leading importer and distributor of interactive video games, today announced that it has been appointed as the official distributor of the upcoming rugby game Jonah Lomu Rugby Challenge on Xbox360, PS3 and PC. As a rugby nation, Megarom is very excited to have the opportunity to bring a game that will resonate with the South African audience.”

It is difficult to predict which will be the better game at this point, but Rugby World Cup 2011 will have an edge with local players, as it has the exclusive rights to the Sprinkbok rugby team.
