EA: Stereoscopic 3D is an epic fail

Looks like it isn’t just consumers who don’t give a toss about 3D – now even the industry that wants us to want 3D is increasingly disillusioned about it all.

“We have not seen a big uptake [in 3D gaming],” EA chief John Riccitiello said during an annual shareholder meeting yesterday (via VentureBeat). “We have not seen a big uptake in 3D TVs in the home [either].

He pointed also to the underwhelming launch of Nintendo’s 3DS, which is about to see a global price cut in response to poor sales.

“We are not here trying to drive a market. We are here to react to what customers want,” he added, saying that the publisher is now investing its cash in mobile, social, and other online gaming projects instead.

“We see really high returns in these markets and very poor returns focusing on 3D, so we are allocating our resources toward new innovations,” Riccitiello said.

A few weeks back, EA announced they’d bought PopCap for at least $750 million.
