Rumour: PS Vita release date outed

1 August 2011

If you believe all the talk, the PS Vita is shaping up to be quite a killer handheld gaming device. It’s packed to the brim with connectivity options (3G, WiFi, GPS); it will boast a number of software features that give it appeal beyond its core gaming function; there are two touch-inputs, one on the rear and one being the primary high-res OLED touch display; and the gaming hardware under the hood should be giving the PS3 a run for its money.

So, the big question at the moment is when will the PS Vita be available? All things pointed to a big reveal at Gamescom in August. However, it looks like UK retailer Blockbuster may have inadvertently spilled the beans.

Coming via IGN, who received from one of their readers a scan of an advertisement (below) from Blockbuster UK, the PS Vita will be hitting UK retail on Friday 28 October 2011. If this is true, it could mean the same for SA retail, as our country typically follows EU and UK release schedules.

Perhaps backing up this date, as pointed out by IGN, was a press release from publisher 505 Games for their upcoming Supremacy MMA. The release stated that the game, which is for the PS Vita, would be launching “this fall”, which in Northern hemisphere speak translates to Q4 2011.

Will Sony reinvent the way we do handheld gaming in October, or will the PS Vita go the way of the 3DS?
