You don’t hear much about what goes on in North Korea, but when you do, it’s almost always pretty weird.
Now, according to a report over on the New York Times, Korean emperor-overlord-god-whatever Kim Jong-il is funding his latest human rights abuse campaign with a bunch of MMO scams.
The reports claims that a group of Chinese hackers had developed a hack allowing “dozens of unmanned PCs” to play MMOs like Lineage and Dungeon and Fighter. The accumulated in-game currency and gear was then sold off for real cash, allegedly banking some US$6 million over two years.
Some of this money was then wired over to agents in Pyongang in North Korea, and presumably invested in building new gulags or making bullets or suppressing free thought or whatever.
Unsurprisingly, nobody in North Korea has offered an official statement on the matter, although it’s probably safe to assume some people have been shot.
