Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but it turns out it’s also a cash printing machine – ProjectorGames’ Minecraft clone, FortressCraft, is now officially the Xbox LIVE Indie Games channel’s biggest ever hit, with 350 000 copies sold and a $1 million in the bank in just six months.
And probably just in time too, with the real Minecraft prepping for its own XBLA launch sometime pretty soon. Something tells me FortressCraft’s popularity might just take a bit of a dive around about the same time.
Predictably enough, FortressCraft has invited some criticism, even from Minecraft creator Notch, who has previously described it as, “an obvious attempt to just take something popular and clone it as closely as possible. I still think it’s important that people are allowed and able to do things like that, but it’s hardly graceful.”
The comment prompted ProjectGames’ DjArcas to respond with a lengthy rebuttal, pointing out that FortressCraft totally has rayguns and trampolines, and Minecraft totally doesn’t, so there.
