Domain trolls grab wiiu.com URL before Nintendo

15 August 2011

Oh hey, got a moment? Go on over to www.wiiu.com and take a good look around. What’s wrong with this picture? If you guessed “Well, um, it has nothing to do with the Nintendo console of the same name, it’s just some lame shopping site with loads of ads”, you win a prize.

According to a whois query, the URL was registered back in 2004 already (interestingly enough, before the Wii was even announced), but the most recent update was on 8 June 2011. Which – for those of you keeping up – is the day after Nintendo announced the Wii U at E3. Coincidence?

Probably not.

The registrar is hidden by whois privacy protocols, although it’s probably safe to assume Nintendo’s people have been calling their people, and trying to work something out. It’s kind of odd that they didn’t sort this out before announcing the console, though.

Nintendo has just filed almost 20 trademark applications for the name “Wii U” with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, so it’s really only a matter of time and legal fees now.
