Concluding their opening Gamescom 2011 presentation, Sony Europe CEO and president Andrew House revealed that the company will be dropping the price of the PlayStation 3 console globally. The new pricing will be set at €249, $249 and 24,980 Yen. No specific model was mentioned during the presentation, but Amazon.co.uk has already listed pricing which suggests that the above mentioned prices are for the 320GB versions.
MyGaming is awaiting confirmation from local PlayStation product distributor Ster Kinekor on the new local pricing point – so don’t rush out and buy a new PS3 until the new prices have been confirmed. This makes the slightly aging PS3 an attractive looking purchase, with a direct conversion from euro coming in at just over R2,500. This means we might see the console sneaking in under the R3,000 mark. This would place it squarely in pricing competition with the Xbox 360 250GB.
Michael Denny, Sony’s Senior VP of worldwide studios, Europe, believes that the PlayStation 3 is powerful enough to reduce churn, a statement which hints that Sony foresees many years of gaming life for the PS3. With the holiday shopping season just around the corner and some big name titles in support, such as Uncharted 3, Sony could be looking at a resurgence in PS3 sales going in to 2012.
