Minecraft creator challenges Bethesda to Quake match to settle “Scrolls” name dispute

17 August 2011

A week or so back, Bethesda decided to sue Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson over an in-development project called “Scrolls”. Turns out Bethesda thinks it owns the word because of the Elder Scrolls series, which is kind of mad because nobody even really knows what the hell the Elder Scrolls even are.

Anyway, Notch has challenged Bethesda to settling this dispute the old fashioned way – a three-on-three Quake deathmatch.

“Remember that scene in Game of Thrones where Tyrion chose a trial by battle in the Eyrie?” writes Notch on his blog. “Well, let’s do that instead!”

“I challenge Bethesda to a game of Quake 3. Three of our best warriors against three of your best warriors. We select one level, you select the other, we randomize the order. 20 minute matches, highest total frag count per team across both levels wins.

“If we win, you drop the lawsuit.

“If you win, we will change the name of Scrolls to something you’re fine with.

“Regardless of the outcome, we could still have a small text somewhere saying our game is not related to your game series in any way, if you wish.

“I am serious, by the way.”

Somebody has to make this happen. Honestly, at this point it’s the only way Bethesda isn’t going to look a gigantic swear swear swear.
