Windows 8 will have an App Store

20 August 2011

Apple has exploded in popularity over the last few years, with each new product gaining massive amounts of global success. A large part of the appeal for Apple products is the App Store, a massive repository of programs to do, well, just about anything. This makes Apple products extremely versatile, and has no doubt contributed to their phenomenal popularity – over 15 billion apps downloaded in three years.

It would seem Windows is looking to follow in Apple’s golden footsteps, and create a custom App Store of their own. This bit of news comes from a post on the Microsoft Developer Network blog, reported by gamesindustry.biz, which lists all the teams currently working on Windows 8 features – including App Store, App Compatibility, Device Compatibility and App Experience.

The post also reads, “You can look at all the comments and see the incredible demand for new features across a very wide range of scenarios.”

“Folks want new things, and changes to existing things; they want features to be available globally, to be accessible, and to be super high quality; they want things to work on existing hardware, and to take advantage of the latest new hardware. Our job is to get as much done in as short a time as possible, at a very significant scale.”

Microsoft seems to have big plans for its next OS, let’s hope we won’t have another Vista on our hands.
