PlayStation Home to get an extreme, theme park makeover

23 August 2011

PlayStation Home is one of those things that sounded like a good idea, but just never quite worked out for some reason. So now it’s getting another shot at the big time, with Sony announcing its “evolution from a virtual environment to a world of games, with a focus on rapidly connecting players with game content that pertains to their style and mood.” Which does kind of sound exactly like the old PlayStation Home, but let’s give it a chance.

Home has been entirely rebuilt as a sort of futuristic Disneyland, with a central Hub area connecting a number of themed districts, so there’s basically “a huge game staring you in the face as soon as you come in,” according to Sony’s Jack Buser (via Kotaku).

“No longer will people come into Home and say ‘I couldn’t find anything to do,'” he adds.
With that in mind, Home will also feature objective-based MMO-like quests with “persistent, branching story lines”.

“This update will deliver a more streamlined experience upon login with customized tracks for new, returning and regular PlayStation Home users, minimizing the time it takes for players to get into games,” says the official press stuff.

Sony hasn’t yet confirmed a launch date
