Penny Arcade announces Decide-o-tron 8000 game recommendation app

23 August 2011

What are you going to play next? The guys at Penny Arcade have the solution to this problem, in the shape of something called a Decide-o-tron 8000. Which does sound rather like a shoot-this-or-shoot-that death machine, and probably is in disguise, but for now, it’s going to help you – silly, wet meatbag that you are – make that important decision.

“The Decide-O-Tron is essentially Pandora for games, that’s about as clear as I can make it,” writer Jerry Holkins (Tycho) explains over on Penny Arcade.

If you don’t know Pandora, it’s a bit like Last.fm or Spotify. If you don’t know those, it’s basically a service that looks at your own music listening preferences, and makes recommendations based on them. So the Decide-o-tron is like that, but for games. Get it, got it, good.

“It can very quickly build a library of the games you like and own, and then – just as quickly – tell you what you should play next.  It will be available for iOS devices, and it will be free,” adds Holkins.

The app supports a bunch of platforms, including PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Network, PlayStation 2, Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox Live Marketplace, Wii, Nintendo DS, DSI and 3DS, WiiWare, Virtual Console, GameCube, GameBoy Adv, and PC.

“Though humans were technically responsible for its manufacture, they are inferior to the crystalline clarity of its logicore,” warns the official press release.

“Game purchasing advice is the most rudimentary application it can be put to. Soon, it will tell you which way to turn at all of life’s crucial junctures. Accept the transition, and losses can be minimized.”

The app is expected to launch pretty soon, although a date hasn’t been confirmed yet.
