DICE talks Battlefield 3 sound design

Battlefield 3 is easily one of our most anticipated games due to hit before Christmas, partly because we are all total Battlefield fanboys, but also because everything DICE has shown us about the game has just oozed true next-gen quality production values and game design.

DICE is known for delivering incredible sound in games, and like everything in Battlefield 3, we are expecting the audio to be of an unmatched calibre.

When Battlefield 3’s voice-over producer, Tomas Danko, was asked via twitter what sort of sound engine improvements we can expect in Battlefield 3, he responded “that would be a ridiculously long list, so no. But we are slowly documenting it. I’ll document my VO System next year.” He also said that he is hoping to release the soundtrack following the game’s launch.

When asked whether the music would feature in both single player and multiplayer, Danko said “there will be some music in MP, but not vehicle related. The new music is less irritating.”

Danko confirmed that there will be 170-medic related voice-over lines, 190 medikit-related, and 227 revive/heal-related lines, which means you shouldn’t hear the same lines used too often.

There will also be dialogue corresponding to certain units, such as “jet” or “fast mover”, referring to the highly anticipated inclusion of fighter jets in the game.

An interesting design choice in the audio department was also highlighted: “[Soldiers] sound pro & focused now, and none of that “boo-yah!” s*** & derogatory cheering when people die. I don’t want that in BF3.”

One of Danko’s favourite dialogue lines so far is apparently “I’m getting my s*** pushed in!”

Battlefield 3 is due out on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 on 28 October.
