Ultima creator would like to continue the franchise

4 September 2011

The Ultima series enjoys an extremely storied history, and for many that grew up gaming it has a firm place in their hearts as a series of revolutionary entrants into the gaming world.

Many of the Ultima games are considered seminal games of their genre, and it is somewhat sad to have seen the series fade away over the years, although it still certainly enjoys a cult following of die-hard fans.

The creator of the series, Richard Garriot, has sold his rights to the series to EA. However, he does still own the rights to a lot of the central characters, so it is essentially impossible for either party to create an Ultima game without permission from the other.

In an interview with IndustryGamers, Garriot has revealed that he would love to work on a new game with EA, and has a lot of ideas about where to take the franchise.

“I hope that Ultima does survive forever, yet I also, of course, have my own very particular ideas for what Ultima can and should become over time and so we’ll see if they do things quite the way I would do them… since I’m not there at the moment,” he said.

Garriot went on to reveal that despite him being open to working on a new project, EA just didn’t seem to have any interest in an Ultima game currently, explaining, “We’ve had some discussions at what I’ll call very high levels, but the individuals who are currently shepherding the property don’t seem to be particularly interested in that, so we’ll see.”

The Ultima franchise hasn’t seen very much come out of it In recent years, with a couple of cancelled projects and last year’s lukewarm free-to-play offering, Lord of Ultima.
