Borderlands 2 details emerge from PAX demo

6 September 2011

Developer Gearbox shared a guided tour of Borderlands 2 with onlookers at PAX over the weekend, showing off some of the changes that we can expect to see in the upcoming sequel.

The game was shown running on PC, and we can confirm that the developer has stuck with the original game’s trademark visual style, with black aliased outlines containing brightly coloured characters and environments. Like in the original game, new NPCs will be introduced by way of a short stylized cinematic, and the user interface remains unchanged.

Into the place of Borderlands’ Siren character, Lilith, steps a new stealth orientated character; Maya. There is also a new class called the “Gunzerker”, who will focus heavily on using ranged weapons and be able to dual-wield a variety of weapons.

Enemy AI is being tweaked, and NPCs will apparently pick up and interact with environment objects, sometimes hurling rocks and other items and players. Enemies will also be more cautious, and instead of running boldly into gunfire, Psychos will hide behind cover and try to sneak up on players. It will now be possible to tactically wound enemies, and the new Kamikaze robots will crawl towards players after having their legs blown off.

There are also some interesting new weapon types. Tediore weapons will feature guns and magazines which can be thrown at enemies, exploding like grenades. Then there are torque guns which will have exploding bullets, and Vladorf guns which will have rotating barrels and high firing rates. There is also a new manufacturer known as Bandit that will offer guns with extra-large magazine sizes for increased ammo.

Of course these details are subject to change as the game is still in development.

Some sneaky PAX attendee recorded 14 minutes of gameplay footage and put it on Youtube. Check it out.

Borderlands 2 is being released on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 sometime next year.
