Tribute Games formed by ex-Ubisoft and Eidos employees

11 September 2011

Video games and music have one thing in common – a lot of it was better in the past than it is today. Many gamers lament the classics of old, classics whose magic a lot of modern games just haven’t quite managed to recapture.

Over the years, we’ve seen a lot of fan projects involving bringing classic games into the modern era, usually by recreating said classics using modern technology.  A couple of indie studios have also created entirely new games which try to retain that old, classic feel. Some of these have been awesome, and others… not so much.

Now a brand-new indie studio has been formed with that goal in mind, and it certainly looks promising. Formed by ex-Ubisoft and Eidos employees Justin Cyr, Jonathan Lavigne and Jean-François Major, the studio known as Tribute games aims to create modern games with a classic feel.

Speaking on his personal blog, Lavigne says, “Jean-François Major, Justin Cyr and I have been working together for several years and we also developed Wizorb together during the past 6 months. So, we decided to join forces and form our own video game company. Justin is an awesome pixel artist, animator and aspiring sound designer and Jean-François is our mastermind programmer.

“We chose the name Tribute Games because when we make games, we want to pay tribute to all the cool games from our childhood. We’re passionate indies aiming at making entertaining games with a focus on pixel art and classic game design (sometimes with a modern twist).”

The game mentioned in the blog, Wizorb, will be landing on Xbox Live Indie Games later this month.
