Warco: The News Game is about journalism on the front lines

13 September 2011

Are you bored of playing the same USMC grunt in the same war (OORAH, etc.), over and over again?

Well, now you can play something… slightly different.

Okay, you’ll still be shooting vaguely insurgent character models – you can tell by the bandannas – but this time with a camera, not an FN-SCAR.

That’s the sound of a paradigm not quite shattering, more like creaking under pressure.

I also might’ve lied about the bandannas, because the graphics in Defiant’s Warco: The News Game are actually kind of terrible, and I can’t really decide if those rebels are wearing bandannas or blank expressions.

Maybe it’s that thousand-yard stare I’ve read about, but probably not.

The game casts players as a wartime journalist named Jesse DeMarco, armed only with “a flak jacket, a video camera,” and a “burning desire” to report on “current, worldwide-inspired conflicts”.

Which, coincidentally, is pretty much exactly like being a gaming journalist. Except for the bit about getting a free flak jacket and a video camera. All I got was a Halo T-shirt and a PrtScrn button, but it counts.
