Apple unveiled on 4 October 2011 its latest mobile phone, the iPhone 4S. The phone will be be available in the US, Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the UK on Friday, October 14.
Apple said that the iPhone 4S will be much faster than its predecessor, the iPhone 4, thanks to its new dual-core A5 processor and a dual-core GPU.
Apple also improved the battery life on its iPhone 4S, promising up to 8 hours of talk time or 6 hours of browsing on a 3G network.
When it comes to connectivity Apple announced that its iPhone 4S is able to intelligently switch between antennas for transmitting and receiving data, boosting speeds and performance. The phone supports 14.4Mbps HSPA.
The iPhone 4S sports an 8MP camera (at 3264×2448) with a faster capture time than the iPhone 4. It also allows for 1080p HD video recording.
Apple’s latest phone will ship with its new mobile operating system iOS5.
Apple further announced that the iPhone will get Siri voice control which allows users to set an alarm, reply to messages and get directions using natural language commands.
The iPhone 4S will launch in black and white on 14 October, with pricing starting at $199 for a 16GB version, $299 for a 32GB phone and $399 for a 64GB device.

SA Operators respond
iPhone 4S will roll out worldwide to 22 more countries by the end of October including Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.
Apple added that the iPhone 4S will arrive in 70 more countries by the end of the year, and it is likely that South Africa will be one of these countries.
South African consumers will however have to wait and see when exactly the device will be launched in South Africa.
- Vodacom said that they have not received any official information on this product and therefore cannot confirm the launch date of the device at this stage.
Virgin Mobile SA said that while they continue to have discussions with Apple, they have not yet concluded any agreements with them. “Accordingly, we unfortunately do not yet offer the iPhone,” said Virgin Mobile.
MTN also said that they are not in a position to comment on the new iPhone’s local availability, but MTN SA CEO Karel Pienaar told MyBroadband that their subscribers can be assured that they will do their best to get the iPhone 4S to MTN stores as soon as possible.
Cell C and 8ta were contacted for comment but they did not respond by the time of publication.
